Social Media

Social media is a very powerful tool. It changed the way we interact with others in real life. An example of this is internet lingo making its way into daily conversations, and even changing the meaning of those words. The word “like” has a totally new meaning in today’s world due to big players like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. As bad as it sounds, I personally would be lost without the big players of social media. I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family far away, YouTube keeps me entertained, and I use Google at least once a day even for the most mundane things. However, a concern I do have about these sights is ownership. As an artist I want to share my work with the world, but what is preventing someone else from posting my work as their own? I’ve seen others place watermarks on their photos just to have somebody remove it in photoshop. Social media has its pros and cons, but all together I think the world is a better place with it.

Steph Curry Responds to Young Fan

Basketball superstar Steph Curry responds to nine-year-old fan Riley Morrison's concern about his Curry 5 shoes not coming in girl's sizes. This is an issue that I faced growing up and I am very happy to see that someone as influential as Steph Curry is addressing it.

Oklahoma City Thunder Pay Homage to Native American History with Jerseys

Every season NBA teams release an alternate jersey, called the "City Edition", that represents each respective city they play in. This year the Oklahoma City Thunder jersey pays homage to the Oklahoma's Native American past. I personally really like the look of this jersey and I think this is a very cool gesture to show some respect to the Native American people.

Vision Project

In this project I worked with Tess and Robert, and we looked at what it is like to be a student in 2018. I found it very interesting that many students had the same feelings about balancing school, work, and having a social life. We came to the conclusion that we just need more time!

Victoria Royals Go Viral

After their morning skate the Victoria Royals completed the “header challenge” and posted the video online. It ended up going viral, even being reposted by TSN! I think it’s pretty cool that a local team is getting national attention, even if it’s for something other than hockey. Their reaction is the best part!

Connected But Alone

In her Ted Talk, “Connected but Alone”, Sherry Turtle discusses the ideas behind technological advancements and its affect on human connection. I found this to be a very interesting subject and I agree with most of her views. Social media, such as Facebook, became popular when I was in middle school so it is something that I have been surrounded by for a majority of my life. In this time I have been able to see its ups and downs and experience them first hand. One of my best friends deleted her Facebook in ninth grade because she was scared of the power of the internet. We’re now 22 and she still doesn’t have any form of social media, and I’m kind of jealous of her. Yet, at the same time I really appreciate aspects of social media that let me stay connected with my friends that live across the world. I personally have Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. The issue with I find with these sites is that most people post things just for attention or likes. I’ve even found myself deleting a picture if it only gets a few likes, and kind of hating myself after the fact for caring so much. I’ve noticed that when I’m out in public and I’m waiting for somebody, or I’m simply just alone, that I’ll be on my phone, doing who knows what, solely for the purpose of not seeming alone to the strangers around me. It’s as if reading somebody’s status update somehow makes me feel like I’m talking to them, which I feel is the meaning behind being connected but alone.

Photo Essay: All About M2 Graphix

For my photo essay I decided to head down to my dad's shop, M2 Graphix, to document the process of a colour change wrap. It is a pretty cool process that is becoming popular, that I thought more people should know about.
